Tonight let’s take a walk down an old set of railroad tracks. The tracks haven’t been used in years having been replaced by a new line some time ago. The locomotive that rode these rails bore a coal fired boiler that produced an impressive head of steam—it’s whistle resounded for miles. It ran from New York to Chicago, and in its heyday was considered the way to travel. You and I are having a pleasant stroll talking of the day’s events, when in the distance we hear the unmistakable cry of a steam whistle. We look at each other and smile, as we both realize an adventure is heading our way care of two steel rails. The train rounds the broad turn behind and chugs toward us at a determined pace. When the conductor sees us he quickly reacts to slow the massive machine to a stop just yards from where we stand. You folks need a lift he yells as he leans out of the engine room. We sure do sir, I respond. Would you be Chicago bound I ask sincerely. Certainly, he says with a wry smile, hop aboard, we’ve been expecting you. He helps us onto the platform, as he states that there’s one condition. Condition, we question. Yes, you must leave all your cares behind, as this train carries only those, who, for at least a short time, are able to appreciate the miracle of life. We agree to his terms and he in turn introduces us to the porter. A kindly man, he leads us to our berth, which boasts the finest accommodation— a bath, a comfortable bed, and clothes tailored for us hang neatly in the closet. We freshen up, dress, and join the rest of the nineteen-twenties crowd in the dining car. You wear a beautiful burgundy silk dress and I, a three piece dark gray suit. We share an exquisite meal after which we make our way to a car ordained with plush seating and a bar that serves popular cocktails of the day. All are laughing and having a grand time. We find a backgammon board and play late into the evening before returning to our room. We slide into bed and cover ourselves with soft blankets. We hold each other close as that wonderful old train clicks and clacks its way through the darkness. We’ve had no difficulty in keeping our promise, for no worries have come to roost on this magic night.
