Tonight we are picnicking under the canopy of a mighty tree. It is several hundred years old and it’s branches stretch to create a shaded cover seventy feet in diameter. We spread our large soft cover over a ground cloth and open our baskets. A sommelier brings a bottle of fine champagne on ice. It accompanies our gourmet assortment of sandwiches, home made potato chips, olives of all types, fresh vegetable salad, pasta salad, strawberries, apples, raspberries, and Concord grapes picked from a trellis on the same property. Our desserts range from cream pies to torts. When we’ve finished, we manage to get ourselves and our full bellies into a hammock. It gently moves us when a breeze makes its way through the labyrinth of branches. We fall asleep to the sound of finches chirping from the branches above and dream of flying amongst the clouds. When we wake in each other’s arms, we kiss and hold tight not wanting our arboreal adventure to end.
