Tonight we’re on horseback on our way to a far flung corner of Montana–its northwestern point. There’s a cabin there and an incredible view of the sky. It’s outfitted with all we need, food, fuel for cooking and warmth, clean well water, and a stout barn for our four legged friends. When we arrive we unload our gear and bed down the horses. There’s an old BBQ built of the region’s stone, and setup to burn wood. I get a fire going and brush down the grates with wire brush. There are fresh cut steaks in the ice box, and we season and grill them to perfection–nicely seared, juicy, and pink. Before we threw beef on grate, we buried potatoes in the red coals and they roasted nicely. I split them open and load them down with pats of creamy butter. When our bellies are warm and full, we climb into a double size hammock and layer-up with heavy comforters as it gets quite chilly after the sun sets. Our cooking fire barely emits a glow by this time and with no other man-made light to obscure the view, the sky is brilliant with heaven’s diamonds. A meteor shower is due to cross earth’s path this evening and we snuggle close as we sip on toddies that warm us from the inside. First we see one streak across the broad blackness, then another, and another. Soon falling stars fill our view and we hold tight like two kids seeing fireworks for the first time. God’s show continues into the wee hours until finally relenting. We make love under that starry canvas and sleep soundly until the light of our daytime star fills the clear blue morning.
