Tonight we are on a book tour, but not one that you might imagine. As dream spirits we are able to join the characters, country, and countryside of any book we choose. As ladies go first, your pick is to join The Rolling Stones in an English pub that was documented in a biography you recently read. The band is on the rise and our sixties attire gets us in the door and on to the crowded dance floor—no questions asked. The boys are play’n their hearts out and we twist and turn up a sweat on that old wooden floor. Next we hold hands and step further back in time, to jolly old London. We are walking the cold snowy streets of Mr. Dickens Christmas Carol. The town is alive with vendors selling their wears and songs of the season. We enter Scrooge’s frigid shop and see his poor clerk Bob Cratchit struggle to keep warm with so little fire. Scrooge’s nephew follows behind us and fills the shop with his glad tidings and we join the exhalation. All, including us, are promptly evicted from the premises for displaying such cheer. Later we observe the hauntings and Scrooge’s redemption—a classic tale. You ask that we visit one more before the night is through and we now step into the pages of At Home in Mitford. There we meet Father Tim, a massive k-9, a jewel thrift, and the rest of the gang. The town is beautiful and the country green and inviting. I haven’t yet had the chance to read Jan’s work, but you lead me through all the adventure and fun that is Mitford. As we tire and leave our tour, we promise each other we shall join hands again one night and sample other of our favorites.
